How to make chicken wings in the air fryer

With this air fryer chicken wing recipe, you can get restaurant quality wings at home, making this a great budget-friendly cooking option. I thought these wings were better than Wild Wings, and they were easier to make than I thought they would be!

  1. Arrange the chicken wings on a plate or in a bowl. Pat dry with a paper towel, trying to get the wings as dry as possible. This is an important step to help the air fryer chicken wings get crispy.
  2. Toss the wings with olive oil, salt, and pepper, making sure they are evenly coated.
  3. Set the air fryer to 400 degrees with a 20 minute cook time.
  4. Once the air fryer preheats, arrange the wings in the bottom of the basket, making sure the wings have space around them and are not touching. If you need to cook the wings in two batches, that can help with the crowding.
  5. At the 10 minute mark, turn the chicken wings with a tong, making sure they are still separated in the basket.
  6. Cook for 10 more minutes, but you may want to check the timer with 2 minutes remaining. The cooking time can vary depending on how cold the wings were when you put them in the fryer. The air fryer model may also cook a little differently.
  7. Eat the wings as is OR top with your favorite barbecue sauce. If you use barbecue sauce, put the wings in a bowl, top with sauce, and toss for even coating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a gluten free air fryer chicken wing recipe?

It’s easy to make this recipe gluten free by making sure you are using gluten-free barbecue sauce. Most barbecue sauces are gluten-free, but you should still check the label and ingredient list.

Are chicken wings keto or low carb?

By nature, chicken wings are keto and low carb. Barbecue sauce can vary, though. If you top your chicken wings with sauce, you may want to consider a keto or low carb barbecue sauce. My husband loves G Hughes sugar free sauce for keto air fryer chicken wings.

Can you cook frozen air fryer chicken wings?

Yes, you can cook air fryer wings frozen, but you should thaw them slightly so you can separate them into individual wings. My chicken wings from Butcher Box are frozen in a large clump, so I separate them first. Cook the wings for five minutes, remove, pat dry, coat with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Return to the air fryer, and continue to cook for 20 minutes (or until the temperature reaches 165 degrees). Check the wings around the 2 minute remaining mark to monitor their doneness.

Air Fryer Chicken Wings

  • Author: Laura
  • Total Time: 25 minutes

Description

This air fryer wings recipe requires only four ingredients: chicken wings, olive oil, salt and pepper. Wings in the air fryer are crispy and delicious “naked” (as is), but they are also tasty slathered with your favorite barbecue sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb. chicken wings
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • Dash of salt and pepper (to taste)
  • Barbecue sauce (optional for sauced wings)

Instructions

  1. Arrange wings on a plate or in a bowl and thoroughly dry with a paper towel.
  2. Add the olive oil, salt, and pepper to the chicken. Mix well to coat the chicken evenly.
  3. Spray the bottom of the air fryer with an olive or avocado oil spray (optional, but recommended).
  4. Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees, and set the time for 20 minutes.
  5. When the air fryer reaches temperature, arrange the chicken into the air fryer basket, making sure the wings are not touching or too crowded. If they are too crowded, you can make a second batch.
  6. At the 10 minute mark, flip the wings over with a tong, making sure they are not touching each other after the flip.
  7. Cook for the remaining 10 minutes.
  8. Eat the wings as is or toss with your favorite barbecue sauce.

Notes

  • Cooking times may vary depending on the air fryer model and depending on how warm/cold the wings are when you start cooking them, so consider checking the wings with 2 minutes remaining. Check the wings with a meat thermometer to make sure they are cooked through to at least 165 degrees.
