Ingredients for Pizza-Stuffed Turkey Burgers

For this recipe, you’ll need a pound of ground turkey, turkey pepperoni, fat-free mozzarella, marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder. You can substitute more high calorie options where you desire, such as regular pepperoni or higher-fat mozzarella. I have made this recipe with both low-fat and high-fat options, and they have all worked well.

How to make ground turkey pizza burgers

This stuffed-pizza turkey burger recipe is easier to make than it look. Separate the ground turkey into four equal parts. Then, separate each of the four parts into approximately a 1/3 and 2/3 sized balls. Flatten out the larger balls into thin patties. Drop a tablespoon of marinara sauce onto each patty, a pinch of mozzarella cheese, and two pepperonis. Take the smaller sized balls, and flatten the ground turkey to cover each of the patties you have already topped with pizza toppings. Pinch the edge of the bottom and top patties together so that the toppings are “stuffed” inside.

After pre-heating a large pan on the stove, carefully place each patty onto the pan. As the burgers cook, quickly add toppings to the burgers (a tablespoon of sauce, a pinch of mozzarella cheese, and three pepperonis). Once you finish topping the burgers, add the remaining sauce around the edges of the burgers, turn the heat to low, and cover the pan. The burgers should be cooked after 10 minutes of simmering on low, but make sure to check the temperature with a meat thermometer.

Description

This low-carb, high-protein pizza-stuffed turkey burgers recipe is an easy low calorie meal the family will love. The mozzarella, tomato sauce, pepperoni, and turkey flavors make a delicious combination that will satisfy a pizza craving. This stuffed turkey pizza burger recipe is a quick, healthy weeknight meal that’s high in protein, low in calories, and easy to make.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb. ground turkey
  • 20 pepperonis
  • 56 gram mozzarella
  • 1 C. marinara sauce
  • 1 tsp. Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic seasoning

Instructions

  1. Divide the ground turkey into equal 4 oz. portions. Then, take each 4 oz. portion and divide that into two: about 1/3 and 2/3 portions. The larger portion will serve as the base of the burger and the smaller portion will serve as the top, after the pizza ingredients have been stuffed inside.
  2. Flatten out each of the larger portions into four burger-shaped circles. Place the burgers on parchment paper so they can easily be removed and placed in the pan when it is time to start cooking them.
  3. Spoon one tablespoon of the sauce onto the center of each burger.
  4. Add one pinch of mozzarella (about 7 grams) and place it on top of the sauce. Repeat for each burger.
  5. Add two pepperonis to each burger.
  6. Flatten out the smaller, remaining portions of ground turkey and place on top of each burger. Gently pinch the sides of the burgers to join the top and bottom sections so that the pizza ingredients remain stuffed inside.
  7. Heat a pan on the stove to medium heat. Optional: spray the bottom of the pan with a thin layer of oil.
  8. Place each stuffed burger in the pan. As the burgers start cooking, quickly add the remaining pizza ingredients: a tablespoon of sauce, a pinch of mozzarella, and three pepperonis to each burger top.
  9. Pour the remaining sauce in the pan, making sure it reaches around each burger.
  10. Place a lid on the pan, reduce the heat to low, and cook for 10 minutes (or until the turkey is cooked through as indicated by a meat thermometer).
  11. Serve immediately or store as leftovers in the fridge.
